First a little bit about the potter: - GRAHAM NEWING "I have been making pottery for over 50 years, having recognised my desire to be a Potter at the age of 15, while attending Wimbledon School of Art. From my first fumblings with clay I instinctively knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. There is a sense of being a small part of a continuum of thousands of years of ceramic history. I love creating & making, it is very satisfying to be able to be my own master. I enjoy the creation of the pot from the clay. New pots develop exponentially as I work, new shapes are born from each other. I can't imagine doing anything else. Thanks to my stubborn nature & a bit of luck, this is what I have done for all of my working life. I make all of my pottery on the wheel, with some pieces being thrown in sections & assembled later. I use Spencroft SSB8G stoneware clay, but occasionally incorporate "T" material for larger assembled work & fire to 1280'C in an electric kiln. My inspiration comes from ideas that have developed over the years, by observing natural forms & discovering historical shapes of classical Greek & African pottery in museums . There are influences of art nouveau & art deco & that of european style rather than of the Far East. My work has evolved from organic soft fungus forms inspired by natural flow, into more classical shapes with monochrome matt glaze decoration. Most of my pieces are decorated using the technique of sgraffito. The decoration is designed to accentuate & sometimes to oppose the contours of the pot. I continue to be excited by working with clay & hope for a long future!" This is the sort of mug that you could use every day for your coffee or just use as an ornament. But don't put it in the dishwasher.. On the base there is a sticker "Hand thrown by Graham Newing Church Street Westbury Wiltshire BA13 3BY" No box but the mug is as new.
